India is considered to be the home of puppet theatre. Various types of puppetries are found in India. Rajasthani puppetry dance is world-famous and is known as Kathputli Dance. A Kathputli means a handmade puppet which is made entirely from wood and covered with colourful cotton cloth and tied with a metal wire which act as a string. The Bhats community makes these puppets as well as performs with them from village to village to entertain the common people.

The puppets are usually two feet in height having a wooden head with a huge nose and large eyes, painted in bright yellow colors. The rest of the body is dressed up in bright and colorful Rajasthani attires. The puppets are tied up with strings that pass from the top of them over the puppeteers.

Rajasthani Kathputli dance is performed during fairs and festivals. A miniature stage is set up. The puppeteers show all their skills and talents to make the puppets dance, juggle. In the performance, music or narrative songs plays a vital role as the whole presentation is based upon the narrative song. The puppeteers make use of a variety of sound effects to accomplish the real impact and to give quality entertainment.
In Rajasthan, watching a puppetry is a must. It is one of the well- known sources of entertainment in the state. Rajasthani Puppetry has held an important place in India throughout the generations in traditional entertainment.
