INNOVATION AND CREATIVITY - TOPIARY by Sanhati Saha

Topiary gardens represent the meeting point of art, nature, and human being when a garden is turned into beautiful greenery that is both delightful and brings a pleasant calming effect to one’s heart.

The art of clipping and shearing the shrubs, small trees and sometimes even herbaceous perennials into ornamental or abstract shapes is known as topiary. It is the horticultural practice by clipping the foliage and twigs of trees, shrubs and subshrubs to develop and maintain clearly defined shapes, whether geometric or fanciful.

Topiary can be the most exciting feature of a garden with the forms of birds, animals, beasts, humans and lot more. The term is derived from Roman word “Topiaria” which means Ornamental Gardening. The love between humans and sculptured or clipped shrubs and trees is one that has been in existence since time immemorial. This creation of ornamental shapes  topiary can be traced back to the ancient times when man mastered the art of creating magical structures from nature.

Plants which have numerous dark-green foliage and ability, stand frequent clipping and shearing, are suitable for topiary work. It takes many years to train and shape plants to attain desired shapes and sizes. A lot of attention, a substantial amount of labor, and a group of dedicated gardeners are involved in raising such plants.  The topiaries themselves take time and skill to sculpture, but when done correctly, the results will be worth every sweat.

This topiary garden in Vézac, France, offers visitors an all-encompassing and surreal landscape. Shaping up in the year 1861, the owner of the garden, Julien de Cerval, started a journey of making the place into the glamor that it is this days.

3. Ladew Topiary Gardens, Maryland

The Ladew Gardens are a 22-acre nonprofit topiary garden found in Monkton, Maryland. It was established by Harvey S. Ladew  in the 1930s. The grounds are divided into 15 “garden rooms,” with each room having its own color, theme or plant. What is more stunning about the gardens is their topiary, which is English inspired due to Ladew’s frequent travels to England for fox hunting.

Topiary gardens give any landscape an added dimension in its thrill. Topiary gives the impression of the old world and goes well with old buildings and cottage gardens. The topiary feature gives your garden a classical or vintage look, and it can be fitted into a formal garden. In India, the hanging gardens (Kamala Nehru Park) of Mumbai is famous for its topiary work.

INNOVATION AND CREATIVITY - OTT PLATFORMS IN INDIA by Atish Ranjan Das

OTT Platforms in India

  Source: Wikimedia common

The first OTT platform to be launched in India was BIGFlix by Reliance Entertainment in the year 2008. In 2010 the first OTT mobile app called nexGTv was launched by Digivive which provided customers with both live TV and online content, also it was the first app to live stream Indian Premier League in 2013 and 2014.

But, OTT platform gained popularity with the launch of Ditto TV (ZEE) and Sony Liv (Sony).

Rise of OTT Platforms in India

The main rise of OTT Platform happened with the COVID – 19 outbreaks, National Lockdown was imposed from March 2020 to fight the infection and people started to experience a lot of leisure time with the unexpected halt in their daily live. India witnessed a significant growth in OTT as it emerged as a threat to Television. People were bored with daily life having nothing to do nut remain self-quarantined, so to pass time Indians started to watch different web series (mostly foreign) in Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hotstar and Sony Liv.

Eros Now is the largest OTT content provider in India. It has more than 12,000 films, 1,00,000 music albums and 100 TV shows. Also, " Hoichoi " is the first regional language oriented OTT platform in India, covering contents in Bengali. It has 200 Bengali movies, 30 shows and 12 original movies. Hoichoi also has dubbed content from English, Hindi and Arabic. Hoichoi has also entered in Bangladesh and United Arab Emirates.

Is OTT platform a threat to Television?

With the heavy popularity of OTT Platform, it is right to say that the popularity of Television is fading away. People nowadays are very much on the move and no one is expected to settle for less, same goes for entertainment. Our generation lacks the time and desire to sit in a same place for hours and watch TV. Instead people can watch OTT contents in phone and tablets, even in laptops. The entertainment needs of the current generation are being fulfilled by the OTT Platforms Not Television. Even we can watch sports and news in OTT platforms which is completely replacing the needs for TV. In the near future, we can see Indian audience turning their back away from TV due to the heavy growing popularity in Online Video Contents.

INNOVATION AND CREATIVITY - THE PALM ISLAND by Shivangi Rajput

Dubai is a record-setter, a city that hosts the tallest building of the world, the Burj Khalifa, eye-popping shopping malls like the Dubai Mall, hotels re-defining luxury like the Burj-al-Arab, the longest gold shopping center, the Dubai Gold Souk, and many more.

Adding a new feather to the cap, the man-made islands : The Palm Jumeirah, Deira Island, and Palm Jebel Ali and the most recent "The World". It is an ambitious project started by Nakheel Properties built on the coasts of the Dubai. The Creation of the islands started in 2001 and was largely financed from Dubai's income from petroleum.

The primary intention of this project was to attract more tourists to Dubai. These islands have luxuries world-class hotels, entertainment centres, spas and health centres, marinas, water parks, residential villas, shopping malls, cinema multiplexes, diving sites, etc.

Here we present the man-made islands in Dubai and its key features.

Palm Jumeirah

The Palm Jumeirah, the first of the series of Palm Islands in Dubai, well-known for its stylized palm-tree shaped design within a circle and it is expected to be a major attraction for beach lovers and leisure travellers. Palm Jumeirah was entirely built from sand and rocks

Palm Jumeirah is the site of private residences and hotels. By 2009, 28 hotels were opened on the site. A 5.4 km long monorail connect the Palm Jumeirah Island to the mainland of Dubai.

Deira Island

The Deira Island was initially planned to be part of the Palm Islands Dubai. Also known as the Deira Palm along with restaurants and cafes with a capacity to host about 250,000 people in numerous hotels, luxury apartments, and multi-purpose buildings. As of 2014, a shopping mall was developed.

Among all, Palm Deira is the largest of the three. The Deira Islands are four artificial islands linked to the mainland by a bridge.

Palm Jebel Ali

The Palm Jebel Ali is another major project in Dubai that will be 50% larger in size than the Palm Jumeirah. The key features of the Palm Jebel Ali will be a water theme park, boardwalks that will encircle the “fronds” of the palm-shaped island, spelling out a poem written in Arabic by a famous Arabian poet, and six marinas.

The World

Perhaps the most ambitious project of the present times, ‘The World’ in Dubai is an artificial archipelago of small, closely spaced man-made islands that together represent the map of the world. But the pace of development slowed down in 2008 due to a financial crisis in the region. The project focuses on constructing 300 small islands into the shape of a World Map.

Environmental Concerns

The construction of the Dubai Palm Islands has caused several environmental changes resulting in the reduction of the aquatic life, the change in the wave patterns due to the construction of rock walls around the Palm island which have created an unusual patterns of waves weakening them because they now hit the obstruction instead of directly hitting the shores.

Sediments transported for the construction of the Palm island have decreased the amount of sunlight filtering down to the seashore vegetation that have injured the marine fauna.

Condition of Marine fauna

Project risks:
  • Water Pollution
  • Sinking and shrinking
  • Loss of coastal shape
  • Erosion of the coastal soil
  • Weak soil due to constant exposure to water currents and wind
  • Damage to the marine ecology (newly born fishes are not able to survive)
