PUPPETS OF POLIICS : CONTROVERSY OVER FASHION BY ISHITA AGARWAL

  CONTROVERSY OVER FASHION

When it comes to fashion and dress code, there is a lot of controversy accompanying it especially in the parliament. For years women have not been allowed to dress as per their liking.Though women of today hold more liberty and freedom of choice to decide their clothing, there are still some restrictions when it comes to representing oneself in the Parliament.

Although it is quiet understandable that there should be some etiquette and dress code to be followed to represent a party in the parliament.

Often we see politicians dressed in simple kurta’s, pyjamas sarees or bandhgalas. The parliament decorum holds them back from wearing jeans or revealing clothes and sometimes these politicians fall prey to heavy criticism if they violate the decorum.

The combination of light colour kurtas with waist coats and pyjamas never go out of style. not only it gives a formal look but also looks elegant in its own way along with representing the indian culture. The jacket is even known as "Modi Jacket"

prominent politicians and their fashion statement

Contrary to the suit and tuxedo popularity in the west, worn by politicians, indian politicians have made sure to reflect indian culture by wearing indian traditional wear on international stages, they are not much influenced by western ways are are not embarrased to flaunt their own culture.

Sme politicians still have their own style statement. Like Sonia Gandhi whom we always see in a saree with hair made into a neat bun. Or Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee who is mostly always seen in a white saree with slippers and hair bun.

Talking about the male politicians we have Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal who is also known as the "Muffler man of India", which originates from him wearing muffler very often. it can be called his style statement.

The muffler combination with the iconic party cap got viral when he was seen wearing the same on multiple occasions.

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal - the muffle man

Fashion could also act as a symbol of ideology or could reflect one’s political thoughts and background. For example, the color saffron or ‘Kesari’ is known to be the symbol of the leading BJP party, likewise green is used to symbolise Mamata Banerjee’s TMC party. Even politicians have something to say about how their dressing sense reflect their political thoughts.

Politicians will always try and reflect the aspirations of their people. If you observe that there is a change of style among them, that's probably because his or her constituent has also evolved in terms of fashion or style," says Milind Deora, a young Congress MP.

Very recently actress-turned-politicians Mimi Chakraborty and Nusrat Jahan were heavily criticized over social media for showing up with western attire in the Parliament. The two women representing TMC Party were both backslashed for not wearing indian clothes.

Nusrat and Mimi posing outside the Parliament in western attire

One social media user commented: "Parliament is not a photo studio", while another user slammed Mimi saying "she is not suitable for the position". Another comment read: "You should wear some Indian attire in Parliament. You are going for people not for movie promotions. And keep some respect towards your Bengali society."

If this was not enough, Madhya Pradesh Minister Kamal Patel called for ban of ripped jeans in India

“It is our duty to save our culture. We should maintain our dignity. Our culture never promoted ripped and short clothes. In our culture, women used to wear a lot of clothes but people from western countries used to wear short clothes or no clothes. By following western culture, people are spoiling our own culture,” he said.

He added, “Women and girls are our pride and parents should stop their daughters from wearing ripped jeans for their safety. With the adoption of western clothes, the crime against women has also been increased. The ripped should be banned in India."

THE WORLD OF FANTASY - FANTASY COSPLAY by Anant Kumar

Cosplayers at Yukicon 2014, a fan convention in Finland

Origin

At its center, it's anything but presentation craftsmanship where members, regardless of whether expert or novice, wear ensembles and style assistants to address their #1 characters from comic books/manga, anime shows, TV series, or from famous computer games, for example, last year's WCS champions from Mexico, playing Dhalsim and Chun Li from Streetfighter II.

The fast development in the number of individuals cosplaying as a side interest since the 1990s has made the marvel a critical part of mainstream society in Japan, different pieces of Asia, and in the Western world.

Cosplay occasions are a typical component of different fan shows nowadays; there are likewise committed shows, neighborhood, and global contests, just as informal communities, sites, and different types of media focused on cosplay exercises.

Western Origins of Cosplay

In spite of the fact that Japan is for the most part credited as the beginning of Cosplay, and the Term "Cosplay" itself was initially instituted in Japan (who could have imagined it) in 1984, it's anything but a totally Japanese innovation, nonetheless. Outfit gatherings and Masquerade balls have been famous since the fifteenth century, really.

Cosplay in Japan

The actual term was authored by Nobuyuki Takahashi of manga Studio 'Hard', after he went to the 1984 World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) in Los Angeles. He was intrigued with the disguise, written about it in 'My Anime', begetting the term kosupure all the while, and consequently utilized the word in some Japanese magazines in 1983/1984.

Nowadays, Cosplay is extremely popular with tons of individuals sprucing up and getting into character. The getups fluctuate significantly, going from straightforward themed profoundly definite outfits.

When in outfit, the cosplayers regularly try to receive the effect, quirks, and non-verbal communication of the characters they depict. It is presently a huge business in Japan – an entire universe of shows, occasions and devoted stockpiles sprung up around this social and has transformed it's anything but a worldwide wonder.

From a straightforward veil to a shrewd and meticulously planned outfit, cosplaying is interminably versatile. Fully expecting huge occasions, numerous cosplayers will go through a long time assembling an outfit, regardless of whether hand-production it or purchasing the segments from a store like Mitsubado in Akihabara. To participate in an authority cosplay contest, in any case, it is fundamental that your outfit is hand-made and absolutely unique. As well as apparel, extras like hairpieces shaded contact focal points and brief tattoos may likewise be fused into the cosplay. Indeed, a possible time when it's genuinely "satisfactory" to show enormous tattoos (however counterfeit ones) out in the open in Japan.

Individuals put an unfathomable measure of energy, assurance, inventiveness, and craftsmanship into their outfits – (not simply in Japan) – and furthermore into making their picked character become animated.

Why Cosplay?

With the astounding and fascinating history far removed, we should investigate the inquiry which is likely previously framing toward the rear of your brain as of now…

Is it the brotherhood, the opportunity to become another person, the sex allure (of specific characters), the imagination, the local area, or something different completely, which makes this a particularly colossal social marvel?

The significance of the World Cosplay Summit

Ostensibly one of the biggest and most significant occasions in the realm of Cosplay, the WCS assisted with beginning and advance the current Cosplay pattern around the world. The yearly occasion has been held since 2003 and is filling in size, degree, and importance consistently.

2003

The first event was held on October 12 at the Rose Court Hotel in Nagoya. 5 cosplayers were invited from Germany, France, and Italy; events included a panel discussion, photographs of the session, and a mixer event.

2004

Held on August 1 at the Ōsu shopping district in Naka-Ku, Nagoya, this year introduced the now-beloved Cosplay Parade, which featured about 100 participants in addition to the official 8 cosplay teams invited from Germany, France, Italy, and the United States.

2005

The WCS transferred from an invitational-based system to a system where preliminary events were held around the world to select cosplay participants. This was also the first year to hold the Cosplay Championship. Single and group teams came to represent each country with 4 cosplayers from each nation. Along with supporting activities, the event took place in 2 main locations: The Cosplay Parade was held in Osu on July 31 and the Cosplay Championship was held at the Expo Dome on August 7 during Expo 2005. 40 people from seven countries participated in the first Cosplay Championship, with France winning the group category, Italy wins the individual category, and the overall contest winner being Italy.[6] The initial goal of the event was to bring a part of Japanese youth culture to Expo 2005 and the event enjoyed the support of the Expo organizing committee — the Japan Association for the 2005 World Exposition

2006

The next year the event moved to the venue for the Cosplay Championship the location where it was held until 2013 at Oasis 21 in Sakae, Nagoya. 9 countries competed: Italy, Germany, France, Spain, China, Brazil, Thailand, Singapore, and Japan, with a total of 22 cosplayers. Maurisio Somenzari L. Olivas and Monica Somenzari L. Olivas is a brother-and-sister team who represented Brazil, winning the grand prize at the 2006 summit. Dressed respectively as Hughes de Watteau and Augusta Vradica from Trinity Blood, they made their costumes by hand with help from their parents. This year the WCS has gained the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport (MLIT). Over 5,000 people attended the Cosplay Championship stage event and several thousand more attended the Cosplay Parade. TV Aichi broadcast another TV documentary special, “World Cosplay Summit 2006: New Challengers”.

Conclusion

Brotherhood, having the option to communicate your inventiveness, a feeling of the local area, making new companions, and now and again in any event, discovering your first love – these are everything conceivable through the overall allure of cosplay. Which began as a last-minute thought in 1939 is currently perhaps the most extraordinary overall marvels within recent memory?

Where is cosplay heading from here? One thing is without a doubt. This pattern isn't easing up at any point in the near future, and will just fill in fame in the coming years if the unimaginable development of the WCS and other cosplay occasions is any sign. What's astounding, fascinating, alarming, shrewd, interesting, and engaging person portrayals individuals still can't seem to concoct is something we're certainly anticipating at the following year's WCS in Japan.

PUPPETS OF POLITICS - WOMEN POLITICIANS SETTING FASHION TREND BY Debosmita Mandal

In the last few months, a trend has emerged: The wardrobes of Washington, D.C’s most powerful women are inspiring the type of excited fashion interest that was previously reserved for celebrities or style influencers. After Kamala Harris wore Timberland boots(with pearls) search for the shoes increased on search fashion platform, while demand for the brand rose as compared to the week before.

More examples like – Hillary Clinton style statement with her powersuits hitting headlines across the world and US politician Rep. Alexandria Ocasia Cortez showed her Telfar bag on Instagram. The fashion platform is not the first to use the word “influencer” to describe a political figure.

Once, The New York Times ran an article titled “Cuomo, Fauci, Birx: The New Influencers,” in which it talked about the public’s fascination with White House.

Recently, Elle (worldwide lifestyle magazine) puplished an article, “How politicians Became 2020’s Biggest Fashion Influencers,” leaving no doubt that political leaders have become figures to watch for elegant choices. It’s not entirely surprising, fashion and politics go hand-in-hand. In fact, the statement “fashion is political” has been used so often – including, recently, when referencing Nancy Pelosi’s matching masks and pantsuits – it has become a cliche.

Picture courtesy - google ( from the article)

One of the most iconic women in American history, Michelle Obama was always very concerned about her fashion sense. She never plays game when it comes on her style. Not only has she been an icon since she stepped in the White House, but the former first lady was also serving up jaw-dropping looks back to back while promoting her book 'BECOMING'.

(Video of Michelle Obama trendy looks)

For many, it has been inspiring on an aesthetic level to see Nancy Pelosi(Speaker of US House of Rep.) embrace masks and make them into a fashion statement – which has since become a common sight on the political stage – before many of us discovered the fun of shopping for a face mask that could express our personal style.

White on white: On the runway, on the street, even in the White House, fashion is bleaching it out as women wear all white ensembles to make a statement. White can make a fashion statement as well as a political one.
