TRADITIONAL INDIA: POOTS AND PHERAN- FEEL YOU WARM AND LOOKS YOU STYLISH by Jayashree Chatterjee

India is a diverse country. Each state has different clothing according to the temperature of the different state. In India girls mainly wear saree and boys wear dhoti. But the style of wearing saree and dhoti are different in different states.

The environment in North India is very different from all the state.  It very cold here so you have to wear thick clothes. Pheran and poots are such garments.
Poots and Pheran is mainly made for protect the person form the chilly winter of Kashmir. The dress traces back to the Mughal era from where the Royal style of this long garment was inspired. Probably the name Pheran was derived from a Greek word, Apron, while also a belief is followed that it got the name from Central Asia, Tajikistan as Peraband.

Poots is the term given to the traditional Kashmiri attire worn by the Kashmiri men and women. Pheran is a long coat or cloak it is made of wool or tweed, worn both by women and men. Pheran and poots together make two sets of cloak or gown worn one above the other. This dress is the traditional outfit of Kashmir men and women.

The robes are usually embellished with intricate zari embroidery which gives it a rather majestic look. This dress worn by Muslim Kashmiri society. Sleeves and are knee length, where as the ones donned by Hindu Kashmiri women are ankle length and are narrow sleeved. Traditionally Pheran and poots were found in various bright colours like yellow, orange, bright green and tomato red.
